UMatter Program
Overview

About the UMatter Program
Vision: Helping students develop independence and confidence by providing meaningful learning experiences in a university setting.
Mission: Committed to creating pathways for students to access higher education, develop life
skills, and prepare for long-term employment and self-sufficiency.
The Eileen Hoffman Hafer UMatter Program is a specialized postsecondary education
program designed to offer young adults with intellectual disabilities the chance to
participate in college courses, campus activities, and career preparation.
Through guidance from UMatter staff and peer mentors, students in the program gain
experience in shifting from high school to college, building social connections, and
developing essential skills for independent living and employment. Eligible students
can receive scholarship funds to assist with tuition, housing, fees, and other expenses.
Program Goals
The program helps students strengthen their abilities across four key areas based on their individual interests and personalized learning plans:
- Academic Development
- Career Preparation
- Social Skills

Over two years, students complete their coursework and earn an Employment Readiness Certificate from the UMatter program along with Micro-Badges from USF, based on their career goals. The Employment Readiness Badge focuses on eight essential workplace skills:
- Communication
